Movie Memorabilia - The AFI’s List of Top Screen Legends

Beginning in 1998, the American Film Institute (AFI) has celebrated the 100th anniversary of American film with a series of “Top 100″ lists.  This series began in 1998 with “100 Years…100 Movies” — a list of the 100 greatest American movies of all time, and has continued through 2008, when the AFI’s “10 Top 10″ list honored the top 10 movies in 10 classical film genres.

We’ve begun a series of posts devoted to the screen legends who were honored on the AFI’s “100 Years… 100 Stars” list in 1999. This list celebrates the accomplishments of the 50 greatest screen legends (25 men and 25 women) of all time. The AFI defined “American screen legend” as “as an actor or a team of actors with a significant screen presence in American feature-length films whose screen debut occurred in or before 1950, or whose screen debut occurred after 1950 but whose death has marked a completed body of work.”

These 50 honored screen legends were presented by 50 contemporary film stars, bringing the total list of film stars to 100.
