Bollywood Art Goes to Gavel

From The Washington Post comes a fascinating report on Bollywood posters and paintings being sold at auction in Mumbai.

“Ninety percent of our movie memorabilia is lost, gone forever. We are a negligent nation when it comes to popular culture. It is the largest film industry in the world, but it is not considered worth preserving,” says the [auction house] owner, Neville Tuli, who also keeps a cultural archive. Tuli has about 300,000 objects of movie memory — posters, costumes, billboards, booklets and props. Two years ago, he began including them in his traditional art auctions.

Movie Poster Guide - Part 2 - USA Poster Sizes

Our movie poster guide continues with some information on the sizes of original USA movie posters.

One Sheet
The most common movie poster size in the United States is the one sheet (or 1sh). During the period that the National Screen Service (NSS) handled the printing and distribution for the bulk of the movie posters in the USA, one sheet posters were typically 27″X41″ (vertical presentation), with a white border. Since 1985, it has become standard for one sheet posters to be 27″X40″, and generally without a border.

Movie Poster Guide - Part 1 - Original USA Posters

Collecting movie posters can be both an enjoyable hobby for avocational collectors and a rewarding pursuit for serious collectors.  As you get started with poster collecting, you will find references to a wide array of movie poster terms and poster sizes.  We’re here to help you decipher that information with a series of posts on movie poster terminology and sizes.

Part 1 of our movie poster guide here discusses original posters in the United States — posters printed for distribution in the USA to advertise films made by USA studios. As the series continues, we’ll discuss the sizes of USA movie posters; types and uses of USA posters; movie poster terminology and sizes in Australia and the UK; and other non-US posters.

Original movie posters - USA
A guide from poster seller Cinemasterpieces describes an “original” movie poster as a “poster that was issued for a movie by the National Screen Service (NSS), or by a movie studio, or by another company authorized by the studio for display in an actual movie theater” at the time of the films original release.”
